The First Year Experience Program

Welcome

Your first year at Jackson State University will be filled with excitement, anticipation, challenges and high expectations. The First Year Experience, a signature program for first year students, is designed to help you meet your expectations, conquer your challenges, fulfill your anticipated academic needs, and provide you with an exciting experience. The First Year Experience includes both curricular and co-curricular components to help you make a smooth transition to university life as well as enhancing your college experience in and out of the classroom. Our goal is to assist you on your journey to becoming a JSU graduate, a responsible citizen and an outstanding world leader.

Mission Statement

The mission of the First-Year Experience (FYE) is to increase freshman to sophomore retention by providing an exceptional educational experience common to all freshmen.  The experience will aid students in maximizing their potential for academic success. This is accomplished by assisting them in overcoming the individual and interpersonal challenges they face during the first college year, thereby making a successful and responsible transition to the college environment.  First-Year students are provided academic, social, service and leadership opportunities that extend throughout the year and allow for a variety of creative acadmeic and co-curricular activities.

New Student Orientation and Welcome Week Activities

The mission of the New Student Orientation and Welcome Week activities is to facilitate connections with the university community in a meaningful and lasting way by providing students with a comprehensive and personal introduction to Jackson State University thereby easing their transition to collegiate life. The activities scheduled allow students to participate in first year assessment, academic advising, registration, an introduction to campus resources, and the involvement opportunities at the university. First year students will also have the opportunity to meet with university administrators, first year professional and faculty advisors, staff and other first year students who will become an important part of your college experience.  To ensure a great beginning at a great institution, attendance is required for all new students who wish to register before classes begin.
