THE W.E.B. Du BOIS HONORS COLLEGE
*WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE BEST*

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the W.E.B. Du Bois Honors College is to foster the intellectual development of students by encouraging creativity, analytical thinking and critical inquiry, while promoting intellectual independence and nurturing academic growth.

GOALS

  • To create a unit within the University specially designed to give a more personal, more extensive and intensive preparation to high achieving students who have demonstrated potential through ACT/SAT scores and academic performance in high school.
  • To offer high achieving students the opportunity to benefit from an enriched education that will lead to their being productive citizens, outstanding leaders and role models for their community, the nation, and the world.

OBJECTIVES

  • To expand cultural awareness through educational experiences by providing opportunities to attend and participate in historical and cultural events.
  • To provide the opportunity for participation in Honors classes with students with similar records of academic excellence and promise.
  • To provide the experience of interaction in informal settings with other young scholars in “Honors Colloquia,” research -oriented mini courses.
  • To promote an atmosphere of friendship, acceptance, respect, and genuine concern for each other as well as for non-participant students.

HONORS COLLEGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

           Completion of College Prep classes
Strong B average in high school work
Minimum ACT score of 21 or SAT equivalent
            Freshman or Sophomore standing

THE CURRICULUM

In addition to regular classes, Honors students take Honors sections of several General Education courses required by the University for all students.  Most of these classes are offered during the students’ freshman and sophomore years.  Each student’s program is individually planned carefully by the Associate Dean of the Honors College in conjunction with the individual students.

BENEFITS
  • Early preparation for graduate and professional school and corporate America.
  • Smaller classes which allow more interaction between the instructor and the students and more personal attention.
  • Strong bonding that extends beyond the classroom into the professional world, and strengthens the students’ networking ability and increases their marketability.
  • More interesting classes, as students in the Honors classes tend to be articulate, inquisitive, and eager to take active participation in class discussion.
  • The classes tend to be inspirational and more challenging because they have been tailored to the students’ academic ability and preparation for college work and beyond.
